Isn't there a point when one has to make a moral and ethical stance? See not voting is not showing up. It is not participating in the process. I participate. I will do what I always do on election day - I will cast my ballot (just perhaps not for one office) I will drive people to and from the polls - I will do what I do every year and continue to register people to vote. I will continue to work for and with candidates in whom I believe. So all that I do as part of the process - not simply money but the fact that I spend at the minimum a third of my life actively involved in the process - that is not participation?
I'm not a sore loser. There were issues that I had with Hillary Clinton - she was far too hawkish for my tastes. Obama - I have no trust in the man. No more trust than I had/have in GWB - yet, I should put aside my personal set of ethics? my own moral code? and I should vote in someone whom I think is a liar, a hypocrite, and who has no respect for me as a woman or as a lesbian - much less as a voter - simply because my protest will go unnoticed? My votes in most elections go unnoticed as I have a tendency to back candidates who do not win.
Does a protest made in silence carry less weight than one that carries fanfare? Doesn't all protest start with a single voice?
Voting is an honor. It is a privilege. It is never something to be taken lightly.I honestly believe that voting for someone in whom I have no trust - who I believe is dishonest - is disrespecting what this country was built on. I honestly believe that as long as we continue this process of voting for someone in whom we have no faith - then we will never have a political process in which people believe - a process which will pull 90 percent or more of the population to vote.
Explain to me how voting for someone in whom I have absolutely no trust simply because he/she is a nominee for the office makes the world a better place? Please explain to me how voting for someone - and in my opinion legitimizing their dishonesty and their lack of integrity - makes me a better citizen than saying, by the act of leaving that one race unmarked, that I will no longer vote for a candidate who has no concern for the citizens of this country?
And I'm not being flip - I really want to understand how going against everything I believe that a vote should stand for and casting a vote for someone simply because their name appears on a ballot is acceptable and why casting my non-vote in ONE race as a form of protest is unacceptable?
